Once in a while, I come across a work of art that resonates with me. Sometimes it’s a film that leaves me breathless, or a line in a book that’s so beautiful I have to lay the book down in my lap for a moment to let it linger. The poem, below, is one such example that has stayed with me. Written sometime in the 13th century by famed poet and mystic, Rumi, it is a reminder of how powerful it can be to accept things as they come, and to allow things to be. I hope you find it as comforting as I have.

The Guest House by Rumi
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture,
Still – treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice –
Meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.
